This is part of Vodacom’s agenda to supports digital learning in Tanzania.
8 October 2019, Simiyu. Tanzania’s leading Telecommunication Company Vodacom PLC has donated computers and routers worth over TZS 48 million and provided internet connectivity to ten schools in Simiyu region as part of its program to support the education sector.
This program is a joint partnership with Universal communication Services Fund (UCSAF) to push for digital literacy in schools across Tanzania leveraging on Vodacom’s vast network infrastructure. Through this partnership 300 schools especially in rural areas will receive computers and internet connectivity.
Speaking at Simiyu Secondary school in Simiyu region, Deputy Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Eng. Atashasta Nditiye said the computers donation goes a long way in supporting the government’s mandate to promote socioeconomic development in rural and urban Tanzania through communication.
“Vodacom has been a partner to the government in development, I am glad to see them partner in implementation of the government’s schools connectivity project in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar by giving out computers and connectivity to public schools. We are very grateful for this donation and call on other companies to emulate this gesture in supporting the education sector.”
Vodacom Foundation Director, Rosalynn Mworia said the program is part of the foundations agenda to promote quality learning in Tanzania towards achievement of SDG 4. The computers will also enable the school to access the foundation’s Instant school portal which curates digitized education materials accessed free through mobile devices and computers thus promoting digital learning.
“We are delighted to support the education sector as part of our corporate social investment program. We have collaborated with the government to ensure that no one is left behind in today’s digital age. In addition to the computers donation we are also supporting each school with free internet connectivity”. Mworia said.
Acting CEO for UCSAF Justina Mashiba said, “We are proud to work with Vodacom to ensure our initiative succeeds by connecting all public schools with access to internet to fully utilize ICT facilities. This donation is supporting our mission to ensure communication services are accessible everywhere especially in remote communities”.
The event marks the first phase of a series of computer donations to be made by Vodacom Foundation and UCSAF to public school in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar.
Vodacom has been engaged in supporting development of information communication technology in schools through its smart schools initiative where 75 laptops and desktop computers were donated to Kambangwa secondary school, Makumbusho secondary school, Mtakuja secondary school and Kinyerezi secondary school.
